The McCanns would be happy for the case to be archived.

Clarence Mitchell, media spokesperson representing Kate and Gerry McCann, congratulated himself yesterday on the real possibility that the Portuguese authorities will decide to archive the enquiry into Madeleine's disappearance.

The former head of the British government's Media Monitoring Unit, with whom he maintains close relations in the context of the McCann case, was speaking in Dublin yesterday during the annual conference of the Public Relations Institute of Ireland (PRII) where he was the main speaker.

"If they were going to archive the file, then, in one sense that would be welcome, because that would say that Kate and Gerry were eliminated from the enquiry," said Clarence Mitchell.

Clarence Mitchell's new statements were welcomed in Portugal with surprise because, according to a source at the Public Ministry, "There is no intention for the Portuguese authorities to abandon the enquiry. Don't forget that the main objective of the police work is to find Madeleine. She is the victim."

According to Clarence Mitchell, the McCann family looks on the resignation of Alipio Ribeiro from the PJ and his comments about the enquiry as a sign that Madeleine's disappearance will never be cleared up. The spokesman again called on the authorities in charge of the investigation, asking them to, "hand over their files to the private investigators."

As a reminder, the PJ in Portugal, and the Leicestershire police, in the United Kingdom, are responsible for the investigations into Madeleine McCanns disappearance. Several other police forces, notably in Spain, in the Netherlands, in Belgium and in Morocco, not forgetting Interpol, have been linked to the enquiry.

"This is unsustainable. They must give the information from their files to our private investigators so that they can continue to search for Madeleine," said Clarence Mitchell.

The Barcelona agency, Metodo 3, after six months of investigations, was undermined publicly by the statements of its director, Francisco Marco, who had promised Madleine's return, "in time for Christmas." of 2007. The arrest of one of the detectives, charged with theft of several hundred kilos of cocaine, amongst other charges, and the revelation that they had paid witnesses in Morocco, disparaged the image of Metodo 3 even more.

Well, Clarence, it doesn't look like the case is about to be archived. Alipio Ribeiro said the enquiry could go on for years. His successor has said that the PJ don't give up. Also, Clarence, even if the McCanns were not arguidos, I don't think the police would hand over confidential files to them. Those files will contain not just information about and collected from the McCanns, but statements from and about other people who have been involved or gave statements about the case. It would hardly be acceptable, especially under UK law, Data Protection Act and all, for that information to be handed over to a private company. I don't think it's gonna happen Clarrie!

Fourniret agrees to break his silence. (Enfants Kidnappés 9/05/08)

http://www.kidnapping.be/fourniret/index.html

At last Fourniret is going to speak Fourniret agrees to break his silence. It is, "only a word," he assures. He has persisted in silence since the beginning of his trial before the court of assizes in the absence of, "huis clos," but not from now on, "any ambiguity." "Undoubtedly," From now on Michel Fourniret will respond in public to all questions.

? » Nicole lui donne alors cet ordre qu'il lui réclame. Mais Michel Fourniret fait durer le plaisir.

The magic of two women has just lifted his last reservations. The first, his ex-wife Nicole, launches at him in a voice suddenly firm, "It would still be good to respond." The accused still resists: "It is necessary to understand the why of things. Do I understand it myself....Minou, what sense would it make to present my words before a public composed of bastions of cheap cafés, voyeurs, people also very well....?" Nicole then gives him that order which she demands of him. But Michel Fourniret carries on pleasing himself.

If Madame Olivier had asked for a divorce, I would have been delighted. He waits for two other statements before allowing himself to speak publicly. That of his oldest child, Jean-Christophe, child of a first marriage to Annette in the early 1960s, comes out scathingly: "I don't know the accused. I have never met him. I don't have a problem with him." Anne, his only daughter since the suicide of her twin sister, is still to be heard. The court hangs on every word from this gentle and beautiful face, tense with emotion: "I think it would be good for the families for him to speak," she murmurs. These few words are right about the twenty-four days of silence imposed in the court. Michel Forniret, standing facing his daughter, opens his heart: "I will have things to say, not only to you, but also to your mother, to your brother, to your sister and to anyone who is there." Moved to tears, he has trouble continuing, while his daughter, deeply moved, is barely able to maintain eye contact with him: "It is a situation where words no longer make sense, except to say that I love you."

On the civil parties' benches, some eyes are red. Michel Fourniret, become cold again, is ready to get down: "Me Behr, you have a question?" he asks of the lawyer for the family of his first victim, Isabelle Laville. He does have, but seven pm showing on the clock leads him to defer them. His colleagues for the civil parties also pass up on the opportunity to bombard Fourniret with the questions, which they have been pressing him to answer for seven weeks. No one insists before the weekend of Pentecost, running the risk of seeing this manipulator going back on his word....

Michel Fourniret, however, begins to open up, notably when it is a question of his marriage to Monique Olivier: "The feeling was not there. If Madame Olivier had asked for a divorce, I would have been delighted." Earlier he had shown his, "anger," about, "that old woman.": "I'm up to here with her vague, countless and long-winded assertions. Get rid of all your poisons and say what you know, not what you believe!" His true family is elsewhere: Dominique Catoire, daughter of his spiritual father, yesterday. Nicole and Anne today who managed to give some humanity back to the monster.

Michel Fourniret has, for now, wept only for himself. A new trial starts on tuesday. In turn, the families of his seven victims will ask for ansers. "Thank you for not having added the cruelty of your words to the cruelty of your actions." the step-father of one of his victims, Mananya, directed at him. Once again, Michel Fourniret held the cards. Michel Fourniret promised on Wednesday that from now on he would anser questions about the seven aggravated murders, bringing him before the Ardennes assizes, a statement of intention drawn out by his children and which has not been followed by revelations. Since the opening of the trial on March 27th, the alleged serial killer has not stopped weighing his participation in debates against a trial with neither public nor journalists. He has only very rarely deviated from that position and never truly consented to explain the facts. On the first day, he recalled that he also wanted modified part of the indictment, according to him riddled with errors. He justified himself thus: "what is written remains. My fate matters little but that of my descendants does. " The change in attitude happened on Wednesday while his daughter Anne, born in 1972 of his second marriage, gave evidence at the bar at the end of the second day of the examination of his personality, after seven weeks of the hearing.

Michel Fourniret has stated that he might speak even without, "huis clos," on condition that his two children cited as witnesses asked it of him: "I believe that would be an order and in that case I would speak in public." After Jean-Christophe, aged 44, who spoke for less than ten minutes to utter an unenthusiastic, "yes," about his father whom he did not know, Anne took her place at the bar, black trousers and hair put up in a bun. "Yes, you can take the floor now," she replied to her worried father one last time to find out if his promise would be kept. He then agrees before Me Alain Behr, lawyer for the civil parties, who asks him, "we have your word then?"

To the surprise of the court, no lawyer follows up with a substantive question. It is on a secondary aspect of the case that the accused is called upon to speak, reviewing his acerbic criticisms about his wife and alleged accomplice Monique Olivier, "that dishonest old woman." At the start of the hearing, he was keenly taken up with, "her vague and long-winded assertions," alluding to her statements of last week according to which he replayed the scenes of his crimes while they were having sex. "And your daughter, have you anything to say to her?" his lawyer, Me Pierre Blocquaux, asked. Standing in the box, he answered, looking at Anne: "not only to you..." (he dissolves in tears) "but also to your brother and your sister," both dead. "It is a situation where words no longer make sense, if it is not to say I love you, I could burst I will always love you.

Outside the court, the victims' relatives expressed their hope but also their scepticism about the reversal of the accused. "It could still happen that he equivocates. Fourniret honnest, I have my doubts," stated Marie-Jeanne Laville, mother of Elisabeth who was killed in 1987. "It is certainly to be wished that he speaks (...) we believe," said the step-father of Mananya Thumpong, who was killed in 2001.
